Bob’s Burgers FTW!
I don’t really like to make a big deal of my birthday. It happens every year, and I’m at an age where the milestones are separated by a great gulf of years. I typically just have a quiet dinner out with my wife and another couple; the restaurant is not informed that there is any special occasion and I am spared the mortification of having “Happy Birthday” sung to me in public by strangers.
Friday night I spent my birthday on stage in Kansas City, performing with Superego as part of the annual Kansas City Improv festival. At the end of the show, Superego joined the other acts from the evening on stage for a group curtain call, which culminated in me being presented with a gift bag and the entire audience sing “Happy Birthday” to me. It is by far the largest group of people that has ever sung to me. I could check, but I bet I’m right on this one.
As much as I avoid making a scene on my birthday, I was touched by this. And performing on my birthday put things into very sharp focus: I have, it turns out, a wonderful life.
Thanks to everyone, friends and strangers alike, for their birthday wishes yesterday. Thanks to the Kansas City Improv festival for being so thoughtful and for having cake(s) backstage. Thanks to all the improvisers who signed the card. Thanks to Easy Tiger Cards for my presents. Thanks to Superego for inviting me to join them. Thanks to that couple in the bar who gave the waitress the nice note to pass on to me. Thanks to anyone who enjoys what I do and lets me do it.
As far as “Happy Birthday” goes, well, you just have to take it.
